Breast Cancer Awareness Training Strengthens Youth Knowledge and Early Detection

AfriYAN Ethiopia and partners hosted a breast cancer awareness training, sharing risk factors, symptoms, and early detection practices through expert talks and survivor stories.

On October 17, 2024, AfriYAN Ethiopia, in collaboration with October Breast Cancer Organizations, the Family Guidance Association of Ethiopia, and the Haramaya University Student Union, hosted a breast cancer awareness training focused on prevention and early detection.

What was covered

Dr. Tara Wilfong opened the event with an inspiring message, followed by presentations from Dr. Edlawit and Dr. Mahlet. The sessions covered breast cancer risk factors, symptoms, and the importance of early detection through screening and self examination, helping participants understand practical steps for awareness and timely action.

Voices and lived experience

A survivor interview conducted by Hasset Daniel highlighted the personal experiences of Ms Fatuma and Ms Hiwot, while Nurse Habtamu shared valuable insights from a patient care perspective. These perspectives strengthened empathy, awareness, and community responsibility around breast cancer support.

Closing and appreciation

Asma Mohammed, Vice President of AfriYAN Ethiopia and a founding member, concluded the program by thanking partners and participants and highlighting AfriYAN Ethiopia’s mission, vision, and objectives in youth empowerment and community impact.
